Bonn is the seat of some of Germany's largest corporate players, chiefly in the areas of telecommunications and logistics. Simultaneously, Bonn is establishing itself as an important national and international centre of meetings, conventions and conferences, many of which are directly related to the work of the United Nations. A new conference centre capable of hosting thousands of participants is currently under construction in the immediate vicinity of the UN Campus.

A person can only be an expatriate if they move to a country other than their own to work with the intent of returning to their home country within a period of no more than 5 fiscal years.

Bonn As A Capital

Bonn used to be the capital of Germany until it was changed to Berlin in 1990. Being a previous capital, population was at its peak with most of international agencies taking residence here. This resulted in influx of job opportunities not only for Germans but to the international community as well. Almost all of the national offices and embassies are here employing a number of Filipinos either working in the office or for the diplomat families.

Population Bonn

As of present, though no longer a capital, Bonn has a population of 319,841 (31 December 2009 census) excluding a number of illegal immigrants. Most of the population comprises of international employees working for United Nations Volunteers Organization (UNV), UNFCCC, UNFCCD, Deutsche Welle, BICC, DHL, Telecom companies as well as foreign students enrolled in University Bonn.

American Compound in Kennedyallee

On 24 June 1963, at a press conference held in Bonn, the US President, John F. Kennedy, acknowledges the importance for stability in Europe of Franco-German reconciliation and emphasises the essential role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The Kennedyallee was named after the distinguished President which also happens to be the main area where the American Compound was situated. This compound houses most diplomats and Americans within the locality. Apartments here are designed as that of American houses wherein there are airy rooms and expansive windows as opposed to compact houses thats typical German. The Compound also boasts of widespread lawns and backyards suited for families with children to play in. The American Compound still exists until now but is no longer exclusive to just Americans.
